Our Thanksgiving celebration dates back to 1621…
When the Pilgrims celebrated the first harvest in the New World!
That Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days
and was attended by 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.
The Pilgrims held harvest for a successful growing season
with Squanto, A Patuxet Native American who resided with the Wampamoag Tribe,
as the only survivor of his tribe. He taught the Pilgrims to catch eel and
grow corn, as well as serving as an interpreter for them.
(Squanto had learned English while enslaved in Europe and during travels in England.)
The Pilgrims that survived that harsh winter were grateful to the Wampanoag leader, Massasoit, who had donated food
stores to the fledgling colony during the first winter when supplies brought from England were insufficient. Thus, was
born a National Memory of a moment in Plymouth, nearly 400 years ago, when two district cultures, on the brink of
profound and irrevocable change, shared an autumn feast.
George Washington designated by the National Government of the United States
the first Thanksgiving on Thursday 26, 1789. Presidents after that, however,
had to still proclaim Thanksgiving for that year. That was done by Adams and Monroe, though not all presidents. Sarah
Josepha Hale, an influential editor of a popular woman’s magazine, “Godey’s Lady’s Book” in 1827 began a campaign to
reinstate the holiday after the model of the first presidents. Abraham Lincoln was convinced that a national
Thanksgiving might serve to re-unite a war torn country. Thanksgiving Day …The 4th Thursday in
November has been an annual tradition since 1863 when President Lincoln:
proclaimed National Day of “Thanksgiving & Praise to our beneficent Father
who dwelleth in the Heavens.”
Franklin Roosevelt lengthened Christmas Shopping season by declaring
Thanksgiving for the next to last Thursday in November . In 1941 the Congress permanently established the holiday as the 4th Thursday of the month.
Today Thanksgiving, Food and Family take center stage….
Thanksgiving is a gathering together in grateful appreciation for a Thanksgiving celebration with family and friends: a
deeply meaningful & comforting annual ritual to most Americans.
The Sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year!
There are also traditional Thanksgiving parades in various cities,
many on TV for your family viewing pleasure!
Some parades are with Santa greeting you at the end, marking the unofficial beginning of Christmas!
Of course, there is also “Black Friday”, the day after Thanksgiving…
Marking the beginning of Christmas shopping!
Then, too. is the beginning of the NFL football season..

THANKSGIVING MEMORIES…
I am reminded of a special Thanksgiving that I had away from family.
I was with new friends on a trip to Taiwan.
It was my first trip while living overseas in Okinawa, where I was teaching.
I was fascinated by the culture and people I met there.
I recall that our guide was a lovely young woman who spoke perfect English.
My Thanksgiving dinner was at the Grand Hotel and was a delicious…
But quite different than a traditional Thanksgiving meal!
I also remember having a Mongolian barbecue like I have never had before or since!
We visited the art museum which had art treasures that had been brought from China. We were told there were so many
that they were completely changed annually to display them all.
It was an amazing cultural experience!
One thing I do recall, however, is seeing the official looking men with guns.
I also recall that our guide, who was fluent in English, was not as free to travel as
we were. I remember feeling especially “Thankful” that I was born in America where my government encouraged me to travel.
I loved Taiwan and the friendly people of that country!
That trip and the people I met will always be a special memory for me!
It also made me so Thankful for the Blessings that have been bestowed upon me!
