Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is an annual celebration of workers and is a tribute to the contributions they have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country! United we stand!

We can thank those in the labor movement for:

·        An 8 hour work day

·        Safe working conditions

·        Child labor laws to protect children

This “Workingmen’s Holiday” was created by the labor movement in the 19th century at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Two men are credited separately to have proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of carpenters and joiners and co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” I think it is fitting that he represented carpenters!  We all know the most famous carpenter who gave it all for everyone!

Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, founded the Labor Day holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as the Secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.  It is clear that the Central labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal.

I am sure that both men were important in establishing Labor Day as a national holiday to honor workers everywhere! We celebrate this day in a variety of ways. There are parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks, and other public gatherings! Labor day also signifies the end of summer and back to school. It is also standard now to have Labor Day…Back to School Sales! Everyone loves a bargain! So, Labor Day is a day for fun, enjoying friends and family, and a little shopping, too!
