The “Heart” of It All!
We see the symbol of the Heart that we all know for Valentine’s Day. It is in cards, candy, and many other Valentine treats! The Valentine’s Day Conversation Candy Hearts began to be around the time of the Civil War. The original candy hearts were called “cockles” and were made from sugar and flour. Mottoes or sayings were printed on paper and rolled inside the folded, shell shaped candy. Later, in the 1860’s, the NECCO company began printing sayings on their candy. The candy became popular at weddings with sayings such as “Married in white, you have chosen right” and foretold humorous prophesies of the new marriage!
The conversation candy hearts that we are familiar with today, date back to 1902. The company printed sayings on candy shapes..The sweetest of all being on Marriage Proposals! Talk about Making Your Heart Sing!
Now there are millions of Heart shaped boxes of chocolates sold each year. The first box of chocolates made for Valentine’s Day was made by Richard Cadbury in the 1800’s. There are Hearts on Valentines…For all Ages! Children love to exchange Valentine cards with each other. The oldest know Valentine’s Day card is on display at the British Museum in London. It dates back to the 1400’s! There are now over 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards sent worldwide every year. King Henry VII of England declared St. Valentine’s Day a holiday in 1537! Valentine’s Day is celebrated in America, Italy, United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, France, Australia, and Denmark! Love Makes the World Go Round!
