History of C.B. Berry…Connelly Burgin Berry
Connelly Burgin Berry, for whom the C.B. Berry Community and Historical Center is named, was a Land Surveyor, Historian, and Journalist. Mr. Berry published Berry’s Blue Book in 2006. It was a compilation of over fifty years of his interviews of hundreds of people predominately in the low country but also throughout the Carolinas. He wrote a weekly column in the Sun News and extensively for historical publications.
When Crescent Beach was incorporated in 1951, C.B. Berry was a charter member of the town council and was elected mayor in 1956, and later in 1966. He was the last mayor prior to the forming of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
In 1972, Mr. Berry was instrumental in acquiring the land and became chairman of Vereen Gardens in Little River, South Carolina. Vareen Gardens is a scenic 120 acre park on the Intracoastal Waterway. In 1988 his efforts were recognized with an Outstanding Achievement Award for National Conservation by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
As chairman of the Horry County Historic Preservation Commission, Mr. Berry helped obtain facilities for the Horry County Museum and was awarded the Earnest Richard Memorial Award for exceptional service. He was also a founder of the Horry County Historical Society and its quarterly journal and tours. In 1998 he was awarded the Waccamaw Award for Coastal Carolina for historical preservation. The N. Myrtle Beach Rotary Club was another organization where Mr. Berry was an active member. C. B. Berry’s contributions to the community and its historical preservation remain his distinctive legacy since his passing in 2007.
The C. B. Berry Community & Historical Center is located near the entrance of to Vereen Park. It is aptly named for Mr. Berry who helped acquire and administer Vareen Gardens and its history. A beautiful portrait of C.B. Berry hangs in the entrance of the recreation center. A copy of Berry’s Blue Book is also there. Thanks to C.B. Berry, we can all enjoy the beauty and history of the Carolinas.
