Father’s Day…Celebrating the “Bond that Binds” Children of all ages to their Fathers in Paternal Love! In the Bible, the Book of Matthew tells us to “Honor they father and thy mother.” In the wisdom of William Shakespeare, “It is a wise father that knows his own child.”
Folks at Brunswick Plantation and Golf Resort wish to pay tribute to fathers everywhere! On Sunday, June 15, 2014 fathers in the USA will be honored in a variety of ways by their children…Far & Near!
Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th Century to complement Mother’s Day celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. Sonora Dodd is often given credit as the driving force behind it’s establishment. Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas, organized its first celebration in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Anna Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, Sonora told her pastor that fathers should have a similar day honoring them. Her pastor honored that first Father’s Day with a sermon on the third Sunday of June.
Though it did not take hold to become annual initially, after many attempts to making it official in Congress, it did eventually become a National Holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers. He designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Later it was made a National Holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
