Honoring a Mother’s Love on “Mother’s Day”!

mother's day with childMother’s Day is officially the second Sunday in May in the United States. This year Mother’s Day is May 11. However, mothers are appreciated & loved throughout the Year…Evey Year! There is a long tradition of honoring mothers throughout history!

Mary is the most respected female figure in Christianity..Honored and revered since early times.   She is the church’s model of faith and charity,  an exemplar example of Humility and Obedience to God.

PietaHer union with her son unto the cross depicts the sorrowful Mary in the sculpture Michelangelo’s Pieta in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The Motherhood of Mary is considered in the Order of Grace. Mary is the Blessed Mother to Christians for all generations.

 Even in ancient cultures the importance of a mother’s nurturing love was recognized!

Ancient Greeks honor, Rhea, the mother of their gods.

Ancient Romans celebrated in honor of Cybele, a mother goddess, on March 22 – 25. Celebration were notorious  enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome.

British Isles & Celtic Europe honored the goddess, Brigid and later her successor, St. Brigid were honored with a Spring Mother’s Day….Connected with the first milk of ewes.

  • It was honored on the 4th Sunday of Lent
  • It began as a day when apprentices & servants could return home for the day to visit their mothers.
  • They often brought a gift with them, a favorite was a “Mothering Cake”  – A kind of Fruitcake or fruit-filled pastry known as simnels.
  • Furmety, a sweetened boiled cereal dish, was often served at the family dinner during Mother Day celebrations.
  • By the 19th century, the holiday had almost completely died out.
  • Mother’s Day in Britain – Or Mothering Sunday – came to be celebrated again after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom & commercial enterprises used it as an occasion for sales, etc.

  • Author of the words for “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, Julia Ward Howe was horrified by the carnage of the Civil War & the Franco-Prussian war.
  • In 1870, she tried to issue a manifesto for peace at international peace conferences in London & Paris.
  • In 1872, she began promoting the idea of a “Mother’s Day for Peace” to be celebrated on June 2, honoring peace, Motherhood and Womanhood.
  • In 1873, women in 18 cities in America held a Mother’s Day for Peace gathering.
  • Boston celebrated the Mother’s Day for Peace for at least 10 years.
  • The celebrations died out when Howe was no longer paying most of the cost for them, although some celebrations continued for 30 years.
  • Howe turned her efforts to working for Peace and Women’s rights in other ways.

  • Anna Jarvis, daughter of Anna Reeves Jarvis, was the power behind today’s established Mother’s day in America.
  • Anna swore at her mother’s gravesite in 1905 to dedicate her life to her mother’s project, and establish a Mother’s Day to Honor Mothers, living and dead.
  • May 10, 1908: The first church – St. Andrew’s in Grafton, West Virginia – responded to her request for a Sunday service honoring mothers.
  • 1909: Mother’s Day services were held in 46 states plus Canada & Mexico.
  • Anna Jarvis gave up her job to work full-time writing letters to politicians, clergy members, business leaders, women’s clubs & anyone else she thought might have influence.
  • Anna Jarvis enlisted World’s Sunday School Association in the lobbying campaign, key to the success in convincing legislators in states and in the U.S. Congress to support the holiday.
  • 1912: The U.S. Congress passed a Joint Resolution, and President Woodrow Wilson signed it, establishing Mother’s Day , emphasizing women’s roles in the family.
  • Anna later became concerned over the commercialization of Mother’s Day: She said, “I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit.”
  • Anna died in 1948 and is buried next to her mother in Philadelphia.
