Ellene was living in Syracuse, New York and Fred was working in Endicott, New York…About 60 miles away, when they first met at a Ski Resort in Central New York. Before moving to Syracuse, Ellene, with an Associate Degree in Business, was an executive secretary in NYC to the Vice President of Madison Fund – a Closed End Investment Firm. While in Syracuse, she was the Secretary to Bristol Myers in their Public Relations Department. Fred, whose masters degree from Brooklyn College was in computer science, was the Senior Software Engineer for IBM…Which was to be his Company of Choice for his 32 year career!
Ellene and Fred, both avid skiers, were each with friends at The Greek Peak Mountain Resort in New York in January of 1970. The young man that Ellene was with had gotten sick and was not skiing that day. They were with two other couples, but Ellene decided to ski on her own for the day. Fred decided to stay and ski that day, as well.
They did not know each other. However, when Fred spotted Ellene, he was immediately taken with her beauty. He saw her and thought, “Wow! That is One beautiful Woman!” So, he followed Ellene to the Ski Lift. After getting on the ski chair, he looked back…And discovered that Ellene was about 6 ski baskets back. When she got up to him, they skied together. He got her name and bought her hot chocolate. Their second date was skiing. Ellene recalls that on that ski date, she accidentally knocked him off the ski lift. Finally, Fred found Ellene again. As Fate Would Have It…They started off the New Year as a Couple! Ellene & Fred Discover Brunswick Plantation
Ellene and Fred moved to Wake Forest when IBM downsized in New York and Fred was relocated to the Research Triangle of North Carolina. As they were considering where to live in their retirement years, they first looked in Florida, as they had family there. However, since they had family in Florida and New York, Calabash, North Carolina was mid-way between the two states and seemed like a perfect location. They had a package with Sea Trail and looked around, but it just didn’t feel like Home.
They both Love Sunset Beach and enjoyed walking their dog on the beach. One day, as they were walking on Sunset Beach, a friendly poodle came up the Fred and was licking him. The owner of the poodle came to talk to them and told them ,”You have to check out Brunswick Plantation! I Live there and Love It!” So, Ellene and Fred made an appointment to do a real estate tour at Brunswick Plantation. While they were here, actually looking at the lot where there house now stands, Ellene knocked on the door of the house next door. They were Welcomed in by the Owner. While there they noticed a picture on the wall of Balloons flying over buidlings & a map of Binghampton, New York. They had once lived in Binghampton and had seen Balloons flying over their house. The Schwartz’s took this as a sign to make this Beautiful, Friendly Community Home!
